6 Tips for a Safer Online Presence

Having a secure online presence is so important these days, but most people aren't sure where to start. Here, Pasadena Insurance Agency offers six tips to improve security online.

1. Install a Firewall
Operating systems often come with pre-installed firewalls, but they are generally designed to protect just one computer. If a business has a network of five or more computers, consider buying a network firewall that provides coverage for an entire network.

2. Install Security Software
The installation of anti-virus, anti-malware and anti-spyware software is one of the easiest and most effective ways to increase security online. Software should be installed on every network computer. Devices without these types of software are much more at risk and can spread malware to other computers in the network. Once installed, keep software current.

3. Encrypt Data
If a hacker manages to get through a firewall and into a business network, data could be exposed. Encryption makes data unreadable and keeps computer drives, files and email messages safe from hackers.

4. Use a VPN
A Virtual Private Network (VPN) allows employees to connect to their company’s network remotely and provides a high level of security through advanced encryption and authentication protocols that protect sensitive data from unauthorized access. If a company has salespeople in the field or employees who work remotely, a VPN is the way to minimize cyber risks.

5. Password Policy
An effective password policy should require employees to change work passwords every 90 days. The policy should encourage the creation of easy-to-remember, hard-to-guess passwords that include letters, numbers and special characters. Passwords containing words from the dictionary or sensible combinations should never be allowed.

6. Back It Up
Important data should be backed up daily and in multiple locations, one being off-site. Off-site data is more protected from cyber risks and not exposed to physical attacks.
