If you live in an urban area and want to begin to grow your own vegetables, you may look around and realize that either the small patch of dirt in front of your apartment has not grown anything other than weeds in years, or there is no place to grow whatsoever.
That's okay! Many people have grown complex gardens with simple containers, on their apartment roof, and in those difficult to grow spots. Begin with a visit to your local library or a quick internet search on permaculture to gain a general understanding of your vegetation undertaking.
If you are working with land that has never been planted, you may want to begin with a simple soil test, just to get a grasp of what you're working with. From there, either make or buy compost to add healthy nutrients.
Be sure to determine the kind of area you are working with: does it flood easily? Is there shade? etc. Based on these factors, determine the kinds of plants and vegetables that will grow best. As you plant, stay mindful of proper spacing.
Growing in any environment takes time. Stay patient, and enjoy the process!
