If you want to watch the deer as they pass through your yard, and help them out as they fatten up for winter, ask the local pumpkin patch to donate (or sell to you very cheaply) their broken, lopsided, or unsold pumpkins. Deer love these, and you can keep them in your cool garage and put them out a couple a day for hungry deer. Check your local laws about baiting, but you're usually safe with a couple pumpkins per day.
