It's tough to tell if avocados are ripe -- and the difference between slightly soft and slightly squishy can be the difference between a perfect avocado and a brown, pulpy, overripe mess. To find the perfect avocado, pull off the "button" (where the stem attaches to the avocado). If the hole where the button was is dark brown, the avocado is overripe. If the hole is green-light-brown, the avocado is perfect for eating.
