On Character Motives

Writing tip:

Figure out your character's motives. What do they want? Why? What's in it for them?

A way to do this is to have a well developed backstory and for the character to have a personal stake in the conflict. It'll keep them from being just passive pieces of furniture that are swept along by the story's plot.
