You can think you are a big deal in one market and then go to the next town where no one has heard of you and shows up at the show. When that happens, you have to find ‘one person in the audience’ and put on a great show for them. You are there to entertain regardless of the audience size or the pay. Everyone has played gigs where no one showed up. You need to take it in stride.
Performing is a lot like sales. Good sales people can get rejected and move onto the next person and be excited to pitch them. I like to think of it this way--if
I look out at a small crowd—I say to myself, “Everyone who is supposed to be here is here”. Everyone who is big started small.
