It's tornado season, and that means taking a quick refresher course in storm preparedness. Here are the basics you should know and some tips on preparing for the worst. Just remember "S.T.O.R.M.S."
S = Shelter – Know where to find shelter, and have a plan to find it quickly in the case of a bad storm.
T = Time – Increase your chances of getting storm warnings early. Keep a radio on hand to listen to storm alerts if your television isn't working. If you have a smartphone, download a weather app with real-time storm warnings.
O = Others – Safety and protection involves communication with your entire household. Make a plan and stick to it, including a place to meet if you get separated.
R = Resources – You’ll need everything from home insurance to immediate care. Keep a first aid kit on hand and keep it with you during a storm if you can. If you live in a tornado-prone area, purchase extra insurance for your home and health.
M = Medical – Help yourself and your family if they need it, then help others if you can.
S = Sweeping Up – Stay away from downed power lines, listen and smell for gas leaks, dress as weather-appropriately as possible (sturdy shoes, long sleeves and pants to prevent injuries), and keep an eye out for your personal documents (they might be strewn all over the neighborhood and result in identity theft).
