Any clunker of a table can be improved with some whitewash. Sand the furniture with coarse sandpaper just enough to rough it up. Then paint on a mixture of two parts white latex paint and one part water. Slap it on, then use a cloth to wipe away some of the extra. Experiment in a non-visible place until you perfect your technique. This method is great because it hides flaws and gouges in old furniture. Once dried, add a coat of polyurethane or clear coat to protect the paint surface.
